Description

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an internationally recognised qualification which teaches people how to give initial mental health care until professional treatment is accessed. It also helps to dispel fears some people have when coming across someone who seems to be experiencing mental ill health.

Our MHFA courses have input from co-trainers with lived experience of mental health problems.

FAQ - Mental Health First Aid

What is Mental Health First Aid (MHFA)?

MHFA is a 2-day course that teaches delegates how to recognise the signs and symptoms of common mental health issues and to respond appropriately.

I understand the course is valued at £300 per person. Do I need to pay for the course?

Thanks to our funding from London Borough Islington and Camden Clinical Commissioning Group, we are pleased to be able to offer those living, working, volunteering or studying in Islington or Camden FREE places on our Mental Health First Aid courses.

Who are the trainers?

Rethink Mental Illness has a team of experienced and qualified trainers who deliver our Youth and Adult MHFA programmes in Islington and Camden. They are usually supported by a second person who is a Rethink Mental Illness Involvement Worker. Involvement Workers add value to the course by sharing their own experiences of mental illness with the group to act as living examples of some of the topics covered.

What else do I need to know?

The 12-hour training programme is run over two days, unless otherwise stated programmes will start at 9.30am and finish at 5pm.

Delegates will receive a course manual and workbook, and on completion of the course an internationally recognised electronic certificate from MHFA England.

Why do Mental Health First Aid training?

There is widespread ignorance of mental ill health in the general population and there is the associated stigma too. For some the stigma can lead to delays in people seeking help and support.

There is also a lack of confidence in what to do if someone is distressed or in a crisis situation.

MHFA is a response to this with the aim of improving mental health literacy throughout communities, with the belief that mental health crises, such as suicidal and self harming actions, can sometimes be avoided by early intervention.

Mental Health First Aid graduates receive an internally recognised certificate of achievement.
